We have some hopeful news for you. Last week, a small group of people interested in making the libraries the best they can be met to discuss the future. A member of the JCPL Allies and a member of the Friends of the Jackson County Public Library were invited to participate. They were joined by Jackson County Manager Kevin King and our new library director, Grace Powell. Here's what we were told:
Cardinal (State Library of North Carolina consortium that shares an online catalog) will continue after June 30th. There may be a short period where it might not be available for strictly technical/system transition issues.
State library funding is secured for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
Jackson County will submit a strategic plan for the 2026-2027 year by June 30th, but will start working on a state library-funded, detailed, longer-range plan almost immediately.
The Community Room, conference rooms, and office spaces in the Jackson County Public Library Complex will continue to be available to the library for library-sponsored programming and events. Details are still being worked out.
Kevin King agreed that we need better communication between leadership and the community, and we hope to encourage continued dialogue. We will keep you posted as we learn more.
